The approach is simple: Over four weeks,  see how you can hit the movement minute targets for that week.  Do it with colleagues; go it solo; find your path to better.

In preparation – if you wish – tell your colleagues; send them this page link – invite them to sign up; think about creating some teams together. And then, when you get the app, you’ll be able to officially create those teams and get going.

Yes this is running through december – including the holidays – but that’s fabulous: we’re keen to understand the phases of movement minute practices – that’s life – we’re here to help explore how to make all phases better as easily as possible.

Tl;dr What the Heck are Movement Minutes?

Movement minutes are anything YOU see as a movement minute – that elevates your heart rate above when you’re sitting or standing. This could include going for a walk, going up and downstairs – part of your exploration might be to check what your resting/sitting heart rate is and just seeing what gets it above that amount and by how much. (we’ll show you how to do that once we launch) 

Your TEAMS: You’ll be able to set up your own teams among folks you work with to support each other and share insights and strategies.

WHAT YOU GET As part of joining up

  • You’ll be invited to download our Xperiment in a Box app that will give you the tools to help YOU and your team;
  • Record your movement minutes in a day;
  • Note whether these are AM or PM minutes;
  • If you’re outside or inside for these minutes;
  • How your work went that day;
  • HOW YOU think YOU FEEL each day;
  • Your discoveries about patterns, practices, and so on;

And we’re really really interested in your discoveries.
By reflecting on this information with your teams, you’ll be building insights into how making time for movement adds to your day, as to your engagement with others, and looking at what works, when, and with how much.

YOU’re A SCIENTIST – CREATING OPEN SCIENCE DATA

An experiment is when you set up an environment to deliberately explore how one thing affects something else. Here, this Movement Minute Invitational is to help give YOU and your colleagues time, space, and permission to deliberately look at how MOVEMENT benefits your work, your study, your quality of life – to find out where the challenges are to building it in and to share discoveries.

Results will Help Build Better University Culture

A goal of the Living Lab is to carry out these kinds of exploratory studies together to build a new understanding of Health and Wellbeing that can benefit ALL of us on campus.
We’re very interested not only in helping you feel better, by helping you build up and explore how (much)  movement benefits your day but in understanding from YOU and your colleagues what works, what could use work, to support your wellbeing during your workday – both on your own and WITH your colleagues. 
AND! what’s also a benefit: the University’s Executive Board is keen to work with all of us to learn from these explorations, to see how to build up our culture to support health and wellbeing as core parts of our day in ways (1) to help make Soton the best place to come to work, and (2) to support us delivering on our mission to lead a fantastic institution.

You are the vanguard to help understand how to make this approach as effective as possible. You’ll be joining a four-week pilot – to learn from YOU what is working in our Xperiment in a Box platform, what we need to support better to help YOU share your insights for you to feel better, together.

We’ll also set up a TEAM that you can join as well to share insights/ideas more broadly during this pilot.
